Title: The Positive Effects of the Buddy Model in International Student Exchange

Abstract: This paper discusses the ‘Buddy Model’ of cultural learning and measures its effectiveness in promoting cross-cultural relationships. This model was developed by the author and implemented in 2013 and 2014 to enhance intercultural student exchange programs in Vietnam.   This paper describes the effectiveness of the Buddy Model for enhancing cultural understanding and minimizing culture shock within study abroad programs. The Buddy Model specifically aims to address Japanese and Vietnamese cultural differences by tailoring activities to meet theoretically best practices and the unique needs of Japanese students. This study found the Buddy Model to be of particular relevance for the Framework of the Vietnam-Japan Youth Exchange (JVYE) due to its effectiveness in exposing Japanese youth to Vietnamese culture.
